Q: Do you have any advice for young artists entering a new program.Ī: Beyond finding the right teacher, I think it is important for young artists to investigate the environment of the school. Q: Do you have any pre-performance rituals?Ī: A single banana, a small bottle of chicken essence (a traditional energy boost popular in Singapore), and some last-minute prayers to calm my nerves! (My other) most important mentor is American pianist Tedd Joselson – he remains so even today, as I embark on my doctoral studies. I was inspired by his intense musicianship, and I gained a lot from him in terms of musicality. Q: Have there been any individuals in particular who have kept you inspired throughout your musical journey?Ī: One of my most important mentors growing up was my first violin teacher, Lim Soon Lee – he was a viola student of Atar Arad. I also started violin lessons a half-year after I started taking piano lessons, but as time went by, I came to realize that I did not have the talent to excel at the violin, even though I loved the instrument dearly. Q: Could you tell us about how you got started on your instrument?Ī: I (informally) started on the piano at age six – my elder sister was taking piano lessons, and I copied what she learned, and as such, I was largely self-taught until I got formal lessons at age 8. 30, with orchestra, as winner of last year’s CCPA concerto competition. He was recently a finalist in the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and next week, he returns to CCPA to perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. First hailed as a prodigy on a documentary series entitled “Wonder Kids of Asia,” Nicholas has been pursuing his college education in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Music from Indiana University and a Master of Music from the Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA), and now pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
